Dr Tom Frieden will deliver the Keynote Address at the Opening Ceremony of ASLM2021 on 15 November 2021.  A physician with advanced training in internal medicine, infectious disease, public health, and epidemiology, Dr Frieden previously served as the Director of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Commissioner of the New York City Health Department. In 2017, Dr Frieden founded Resolve to Save Lives, a global public health initiative of Vital Strategies, to prevent deaths from cardiovascular disease and epidemics in low- and middle-income countries. He is known worldwide for creating tuberculosis control programmes, establishing effective health department models, and leading successful outbreak responses, including to the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic. Dr Frieden has published more than 250 articles on infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases and risk factors, and health policy, including emergency response. Dr John N Nkengasong will be the Opening Speaker of ASLM2021’s first plenary session, The Outbreak Effect, on 16 November 2021. Dr Nkengasong currently serves as the Director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and was appointed as one of the World Health Organization Director-General’s Special Envoys on COVID-19 Preparedness and Response. Dr Nkengasong is a leading virologist with 30 years of experience working in public health and previously served as Deputy Principal Director (acting) of the Center for Global Health at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Associate Director of Laboratory Science and Chief of the International Laboratory Branch at the Division of Global HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis.
