SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:
WHO has established a Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on In Vitro Diagnostics (SAGE-IVD) to act as an advisory body to WHO on policies for in vitro diagnostics (IVDs).

Their first task was to help WHO to establish a model list of essential IVDs.

Seminar background:
The first edition of the WHO EDL was launched on the 15 May 2018. It includes IVDs for specific infectious diseases (HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis and human papillomavirus) as well as general laboratory tests used for a variety of conditions.

WHO will work to support countries to establish their own national EDLs based on the WHO’s global EDL. Different patterns and burden of disease mean that this adaptation process is extremely critical. Furthermore, IVDs are used at all levels of the healthcare system, not just laboratories, and so the need for simple technologies that can be used at primary care and in community settings is a key priority.

Members of the SAGE-IVD and WHO secretariat will be in attendance.
